The soup festival

Fete-Soupe-Pays-GacillyEvery year on the last Sunday of November, the craftsmen and women, and the local shopkeepers invite the inhabitants of the village to make their favourite soup recipes, and bring them steaming hot into the heart of their workshops and their boutiques. In this way the wood-turner, the potter, the glass engraver, or the chocolate-maker will welcome between 30 and 40 soup fiends into their boutiques every year.

And these Sunday “tasters” each buy a bowl, and fill it with whichever soup catches their fancy …

A concept of “walking as you taste”, the aim of which is to entice the gourmet visitors into each of the participating boutiques and workshops to taste all the different soups on offer, from split-pea and bacon velouté to chestnut and liquorice soup … This initiative, created by the local craftsmen and women to liven up the “Arts and Crafts City” of La Gacilly outside the high season, has become a very popular event with over 2,500 soup fans coming in last year.

For the actual making of the soups, the association “Make a Soup”, based in La Gacilly, calls on the local population for volunteers. The soup makers sign up and then create that special secret soup recipe within the four walls of their kitchens. Their aim … to make the most original, the tastiest, most colourful soup that will win the approval and the votes of the soup tasters. Each year a trio of soup makers are voted as the Best!! Almost everything has been tried to surprise and seduce our soup tasters, including pineapple and spices soup, parsnip and foie gras soup, green vegetable and camembert soup and cream soups and veloutés of scallop and salmon… What more can you ask for?
