The Photo Festival in La Gacilly was created 13 years ago, and is now the largest open-air Photo Festival in France, with more than two million visitors to its name. The Festival has a strong sustainable development element to it, and features photographs highlighting ethical and humanist issues, taken by the greatest photographers from both the world of art and the world of photo-journalism.
During four months more than 600 extra-large photos are on display in the streets, gardens and alleyways of La Gacilly, transforming it into nothing less than an open-air gallery of photographic art.
And by choosing to mount and show these photos outdoors, the Festival is able to bring a photographic exhibition of great quality, free of charge, to the greatest number of people possible. The streets become a “public space” in the true sense of the term, with photos that educate us, call into question our values and the sense we give to people and things, surprise us, bewitch us and fill us with wonder. This public space becomes a place for all generations to exchange ideas and debate.
